The range of dried fruits has grown considerably in recent years. Nevertheless, it is still the most common types of fruits, such as apples, bananas and stone fruits, which are marketed as dried fruits. AFG Technologies LLC wants to change that with a holistic concept of production and marketing, company spokesperson Ercan Erten said.
AFG Technologies, based in Weißenfels (Saxony-Anhalt), was established in 2016 as a successor to a mechanical engineering company and has since been dedicated to the development of new installation technologies. “Two years ago, we managed to design a gentle fruit drying process. With this installation, all fruits can be dried in less than an hour and a half, while retaining the nutritional values and aromas of the fruit. The process also achieves clearly better standards. in terms of product hygiene by treating the fruit at a temperature of around 70 to 75 degrees, bacteria-free and clean, ”explains Erten.AFG drying technology is similar to solar drying: however, the drying process only takes 1 to 1.5 hours instead of 4 to 5 days.
Production of dried fruits in emerging markets
On the strength of his career spanning several years, Erten has an extensive network in Africa as well as in the Middle East. In addition, 2021 is the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. This is how the idea was born to enter the dried fruit sector and develop a global concept. born. “My concern is to promote agriculture in emerging countries through forward-looking projects. Concretely, we want to forge partnerships with German fruit merchants with the guarantee that they want to sell our products. As part of this, I would then like to get loans for my original fruit growers so that they can finance the drying facilities they need. “
The idea is to add value to both the original producer and the retailer. Erten says, “Exotic fruits like dragon fruit are sold at high unit prices in grocery stores because of air freight. You would almost forget that the majority of most fruits are made of water. Instead of carrying water, the goods could be dried at home and then offered in that country at affordable prices. In addition, dried fruit logically has a much longer shelf life than fresh products, ”explains Erten on the benefits of dried fruit.
Control food waste through drying
Even excessive food waste can be avoided with new drying processes, Erten explains. He cites cashews as an example: “Few consumers know that cashews are fruit. Ultimately, however, only the almond is marketed and exported en masse, while the fruit is thrown away as waste, when it would be perfectly suitable for consumption. I can imagine that in the long run we will also use previously unknown fruits for dried fruits. “
Finally, Erten underlines that AFG Technologies aims to offer a holistic concept. “On the one hand, we provide the plant technology for the dried fruits to be produced. At the same time, we also assist the respective trader in the management of the imports and, if possible, in the marketing of the products and all the rest.
