KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday his right arm is feeling great after setting Kansas City Chiefs records for pass attempts and completions in the weekend overtime win last against the Tennessee Titans.

That doesn’t mean he wants to start over.

Mahomes was 43 of 68 for 446 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 20-17 win, and he even ran for the tying touchdown and 2-point conversion late in regulation. It was the most passes Mahomes, who was known for his high volume at Texas Tech, had thrown in an NFL game by 14 and beat his highest passing total by six.

“The game got a little out of control in terms of throwing the ball a little more than we wanted,” Mahomes admitted, “but it required it. execute. It’s something you have to do on offense to be successful in this league. You have to be able to do both.”

Still, the Chiefs have totally dropped out of the race against the Titans, whose defensive front is among the best in the league. Their running backs combined to run 13 times for 14 yards as the Chiefs made 91 offensive plays, one of their franchise records.

Only two players in NFL history have attempted more passes in a game: The Patriots’ Drew Bledsoe was 45 of 70 for 426 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Vikings on Nov. 13, 1994, and Vinny Testaverde was 36 on 69 for 481 yards with two touchdowns and three picks against the Ravens on Dec. 24, 2000.

Only three players – Bledsoe, Ben Roethlisberger and Jared Goff – have completed more passes in an NFL game.

“I knew we had a lot of plays, period,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Listen, we’re going to do what we had to do to win the game. That’s what we felt. That’s how we got into it. The racing game was going, we would have done more with the racing game. The passing game stalled a bit in the middle, but we picked it up after that.

Still, despite being down about 80 times, including penalties, Mahomes said he did nothing out of the ordinary in his recovery as the Chiefs turned their attention to Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Since I was young,” he says, “I’ve never really had pain, even when I threw when I was younger. We do stuff with my coaches, but other than that, I just try to keep my arm strength and keep rolling.

Mahomes is the most famous product of the “Air Raid” system designed by Mike Leach and implemented again by Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech. But even during those heady days with the Red Raiders, when Mahomes played 12 games where he attempted 50 or more shots, he only eclipsed his Sunday night number once: he went 52 of 88 for 734. yards and five touchdowns in a memorable 66-59 shootout loss to Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma on October 22, 2016.

Mahomes has eclipsed his completion total from last weekend only twice: this game against the Sooners and a game against Kansas State a few weeks earlier, when he was 45 of 62 for 504 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-38 loss.

“He’s electric,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “He’s a guy who can extend the game. He takes the ball out of his hands so fast it’s hard to reach. He’s kind of the heart and soul of this offense, tough to defend against and tough to play against, and I really appreciate the way he plays the game. He plays it the right way.

NOTES: WR Mecole Hardman did not practice Wednesday due to an abdominal injury. Hardman has caught TD passes in each of his last three games with five total touchdowns in that span. … DB chiefs Trent McDuffie said he came out of his first game since Week 1 in good shape. The first-round pick suffered a hamstring injury in Arizona and landed on injured reserve. “I was still trying to come back, come back, fast, fast,” McDuffie said, “but my body said, ‘Not yet.’ I had to be patient.”
